Cabinet card copy of an earlier tintype of Barnett Van Slyke, Company H, 35th Wisconsin Infantry. Full standing view wearing a uniform (frock) coat; forage cap; waist belt with US plate; cap box; cartridge box with strap and plate; bayonet scabbard; and holding a Springfield rifled musket with fixed bayonet in the position of "Order Arms". He is posed in front of a painted canvas backdrop showing a camp at left and a sign reading, "35. WIS. VOL. RGT". Barnett enlisted at Waterford, Wisconsin on February 11, 1864. The regiment left Camp Washburn, Milwaukee on April 18, 1864 for St. Louis, and New Orleans. They were stationed at Port Hudson, Louisiana from May 7, to June 26. They were then stationed at St. Charles, Arkansas. Barnett fell ill and was sent to the US general hospital in Natchez, Mississippi where he died at 1:00 PM, August 20, 1864. He left a widow and orphaned children. A letter he sent to his wife and another announcing his death are located in the Civil War Small Collections in the archive. |
