Letter from Charles Lewis Porlier to his father Louis B. Porlier during his service with Company B, 21st Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Cincinnati, Ohio Apr 19 1864 Dear Father, I take the pleasant opportunity to answer your welcome letter, which found me very sick. But thank the lord, I am getting better. I was so sick that I thought I [would] kick the Bucket. It is very sickly in this city. Dear father, you said that my colt had been sick [and] last night I dreamed that my colt was dead. Dear father, is there any chance for me to go back to the regiment? I wish you would write to my Captain. If the is any chance, I want to go [back] to it. This Invalid Corps is perfect humbug. Dear Father I don't now hardly what to write. There is a circus in the city. They are going to perform one week. They preformed last night and today. They say that it is [a] poor one. There is three of our boys chained and handcuffed, one for getting drunk, and one for quarreling with the cook, and one for knocking a citizen [down]. Well father, I don't now what to write. Dear father, you said that Augustin he was trapping. I wish I was with him to trap and eat muskrat. I think I could enjoy a good piece of rat. Dear father, tell Augustin to write and tell me all the news, and tell Aunt Child to write and tell me all the news from Greenbay. I haven't heard from there in a long while. Dear father, I am so weak that I can't hardly write. I must close my letter. Next time I [will] write [a] little more. Give my love to Aunt Child, Augustin, and all the rest of the family including your self, the first one. So goodbye. From your dear sun C. L. Porlier To L. B. Porlier PS: Dear father, I am very much obliged to you for sending me that money. I don't know what I would of done if hadn't had that money you sent me. We have nothing but fat meat, such as bacon, and poorly cooked Garrashee Barracks Cincinnati Ohio Box 1949
