"New Year's Ball" presented to Mark Harris, Deputy Mayor of Oshkosh, at the Hmong New Year Celebration 2003 (held December 14, 2002 at the Winnebago Exposition Center, Oshkosh, WI.) Black cloth, stuffed and stitched. Per Txerthoj Vang: Made by an elderly Oshkosh Hmong woman; stuffed with old cloth. Usually a daughter is supposed to learn how to make a New Year's Ball before New Year's Day. The ball is tossed for celebration or courting (girl and boy toss the ball back and forth while exchanging personal information). See oral history OH2003.1 for Vang's discussion of the New Year's Ball.
