Certificate of Citizenship given to John Read in Winnebago County, Wisconsin. An inscription on the back reads, "John Read, husband of Elizabeth Elliott Read, presented to Oshkosh Museum by daughter Emma E. Read." The document states in part that: "...he was born in England on or about 1829 that he emigrated to the United States, and landed at the port of New York on or about the month of June in the year 1851, that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States and to renounce forever, all allegience and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, particularly to Victoria Queen of Great britain & Ireland whereof he is a subject. (signed) John Read Subscribed and sworn to the 8th day of November A. D. 1853."
