Originally published in 1836 as Mitchell's Traveller's Guide Through the United States, it was updated in 1848. This small pocket guide and map would be indispensable to immigrants to the United States and pioneers moving westward, with its information on travelling distances, routes for stag coaches, railroads, and steamboats. It states, "Though this present work is designed chiefly for the use of travelers, it cannot fail to be useful to others, as a work of reference; while its compact form, suitable dimensions for the pocket, render it the most convenient publication of the kind now extant." |
