Henry was born on Jan. 29, 1844 at Huntingtonshire, England. He came to America at age 14 years and resided with his uncle Matt Cowling in the town of Vinland, Winnebago County. He was listed as residing with Matt in the 1860 federal census of the fourth ward of the city of Oshkosh, Winnebago County. Henry listed his residence as the town of Algoma, Winnebago County when he enlisted on Feb. 11, 1864 and was assigned as above. He was transferred to Co. C, 3rd Regt., Wis. Vol. Inf. on June 8, 1865 and was mustered out on July 18, 1865. Henry was married in Winnebago County on Jan. 19, 1871 to Helen A. "Nellie" Suidan. She was born on Dec. 9, 1848. They purchased the farm next to his uncle Matt and resided there until Nellie's death. Mary Eva, a daughter, died on Sept. 22, 1877. Henry was listed in the 1890 federal census as residing in the town of Oshkosh at P.O. Oshkosh. He was listed in the veteran section of the 1895 Wisconsin State census at P.O. Oshkosh. Nellie died on Oct. 1, 1924. Henry then resided in Appleton, Outagamie County at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R.H. Mueller until his death on Aug. 7, 1926. He was buried with his wife and daughter Mary in the town of Vinland at Brooks Cemetery. Henry was also survived by a son, Frank, residing on the home farm at Vinland.
