Thumbprint view of William (Wilhelm) Dichmann as a young man. He wears a dark coat, white shirt and bow tie.
He was a son of Kilian and Sophia C. Dichmann. The father was born circa 1816 at Nassau and Sophia was born there circa 1818. The family came to Oshkosh in 1859. Kilian was listed in the 1860 federal census of Wisconsin as a grocer residing in the city of Oshkosh, Winnebago County. He and Sophia had the following children listed with them: Ernst; Wilhelm, born circa September 15, 1847 in Germany; George, born circa 1851; and Sophia, born circa 1854. The children were all born at Nassau. William worked in his father's grocery business and later became a partner in 1872. They had built the Dichmann Block located on Main Street. In the early 1870s he married Elsie Weisbrod (Marriage records for Anthony Dichmann & Eliza Weisbrod-Jan. 3, 1870). The couple had three children. He expanded the business to include spice, baking powder and extract manufacturing. He retired from that business about 1898 and then managed the Wisconsin Grass Twine Company until 1903. He then managed the Oshkosh Bottle Wrapper Company about 1905. He became mayor of Oshkosh in 1890 and served two terms. He retired again in 1916. He died March 11, 1917 following a stroke. |
