Bustle-style dress of brown vertical alternating stripe fabric of velvet and a waffle-like pattern in the weave. Basque bodice with a stand-up collar is decorated with red and brown passementerie gimp trim sewn to the upper center back then extending around the neckline and down the center front to the hip and then around the hip to the back. Set-in sleeves extend to the wrists with a pleated brown silk ruffle extending from sleeve (a longer black lace, most likely not original, also attached to sleeve ends). Skirt front cuts away to reveal a brown velvet and silk striped under skirt which is floor length. Inside waist ribbon has woven into grosgrain: New York. Label on waist ribbon: Mm Emma Soulé/Paris

Subject file: Worn at the 1st inaugural ball of President Grant. Brown shoes to make. Later used in Oshkosh-worn by Mrs. M. Walch. (Research has not been able to find any information on Mrs. M. Walch or a connection to the donor.)

Curator comment: President Grant: Held two terms from 1869-1877. This outfit would not have been the type to have been worn to a ball, if it was worn to any event for President Grant, it is more likely to have been his inaugural address and possible a reception following.
