Description
Purple steatite. Stem end of flat base; bowl interior present. Recent (post-original manufacturing) cuts and abrasions on broken bowl edge, top of stem and one edge. Bands of transverse fine parallel lines on sides, bottom and partially on top and those are partially obliterated by recent cuts. From the Arthur P. Kannenberg Collection. He recorded the following in his catalog: "Pipe stem made from a purple steatite, it is quite flat, the bowl is broken entirely away. The stem is completely covered with fine parallel lines. It was found on the shore of White Lake near Weyauwega. (Received from) Mr. Al Fenske." Original catalog card written by Kannenberg for L300-53 (5450APK): "Straight-base monitor pipe, stem only. Locality: Fremont, Waupaca County. Received from Mr. Albert Fenske. Purple steatite. It was found on the shore of White Lake, near Weyauwega. This must have been a very fine specimen when it was whole. The stem is covered entirely with fine, hair-like, parallel lines."
