Description
Narrow, flat stem made from one piece of wood, elliptical cross section with flat edges. Surface is smoothed and stained brown. 4 rectangular burn marks (1.7 to 2 cm wide) from edge to edge on one face, all have an applied dark stain: 3 contiguous at bowl-end and one 11 cm from bowl-end. The other face has 2 overlapping less distinct burn marks 10 cm from bowl-end. The end with the mouthpiece has curved cuts that straighten out to form a smoothed spatulate mouthpiece nearly the same height as the stem, 2.5 cm long and unstained like rest of stem. The bowl-end is cut straight and has a protruding tapered cylinder 2.7 cm long and nearly the same height as the stem. The purple-red pipestone (with lighter colored mottling on one face) pipe-head is elbow shaped, smoothed, and has a rectangular bowl and rectangular cross section. The shank continues in front of the bowl as a tapered prow with a diagonally cut end. The bowl interior has dark resinous stains. Object Late Date is the year of the Fred McKay loan to the museum, circa 1925. Original catalog card: Locality = Wittenberg, Shawano County, received from John Decorah, Winnebago Indian. "This is practically a new pipe and has seen very little use. The stem is burnt with a red hot iron. The bowl is square all around. McKay bought this pipe from a blind Indian, John Decorah, who lives at Wittenberg, Wis."
