Fraud? Red pipestone pipe-head. With crest. Sooted at bowl lip and bowl exterior, stem-end but apparently not smoked.
Original catalog card: "Siouan Calumet with Wing. Locality: Winnebago Reservation at Black River Falls, Jackson County, Wis. Received from Carl Wittman Collection, Merrill, Wis. Date: Feb 22, 1941. Catlinite. Mr. Wittman received this pipe from an old Winnebago squaw at a ceremonial near Black River Falls in Jackson Co. Wis. It is of fine workmanship." |
