Incised and carved design: sharp teeth, fine whiskers and rounded ears suggestive of a cat; cross hatching and parallel lines along the neck (mane) and long accentuated jaw suggestive of a horse. Entire bowl rim is chipped. No apparent staining in bowl. Original catalog card: "Animal Pipe. Locality: Waupaca County. Received from S. D. Mitchell Collection. Spotted catlinite." See George A. West, "The Aboriginal Pipes of Wisconsin", p. 106: "... carved to represent the head of a panther and is doubtless the work of historic Indians."
