Description
|
| Round (irregular) wooden stem made from a small branch, bark removed, smoothed and polished, numerous over all protruding knots (apparently employed as decoration.) The mouthpiece and bowl-end extend from the center of either ends of the stem and are slightly 1/2 the diameter of the stem; the mouthpiece is a tapered, flattened cylinder (1.4 cm long); the bowl-end is a slightly tapered cylinder (2.8 cm long). The pipe-head is brownish-red pipestone, one side has extensive lighter and darker inclusions or coloring, the other side has one small area of darker inclusions/coloring; elbow shaped with round cross section and slightly flattened bottom; smoothed and polished. The bowl is a cylinder, 2.4 cm outer diameter, at right angle to the shank; dark resinous stains on interior and rim. Shank continues 5 cm in front of the bowl, flat cut end with rounded edges, flattened top edge and rounded bottom edge producing an irregular cross section. Object Late Date is the year of the Fred McKay loan to the museum, circa 1925. Original catalog card: "From the Fred McKay collection, received from Jim Sosatt, Menominee Indian Reservation. Fred McKay and A. P. Kannenberg spent almost a whole day trying to secure this pipe from old Jim Sosatt who lives about 1.5 miles in the woods away from highway 47. He could not understand English, but he knew immediately what a $10 bill was." |
