| Description |
Handled Disc pipe. Red pipestone. Handle only present. Tabular with straight sides; finished end has 3 deep and wide equidistant notches; narrow and shallow on finished end in between notches and in between notches and sides. 5 narrow and shallow notches on one side near finished end; 3 narrow and shallow notches on other side near end. Overall striations on both faces. Cross section increases in thickness from 4 mm at finished end to 9 mm at broken end. Broken end has abrasions made during manufacture of pipe but also appears to have been abraded after the pipe was broken.
See George A. West, "The Aboriginal Pipes of Wisconsin", The Wisconsin Archeologist, Vol. 4, Nos. 3 and 4, Fig. 124. West described the handle as shaped like the blade of a hatchet with the cutting edge decorated with 3 notches. |
