Description
Fraud? Hematite. Oval bowl with large notches in lip; stem-end is notched. Identified as a fake by former OPM curator Robert Hruska. From the Arthur P. Kannenberg Collection. He recorded the following in his catalog: "A Wisconsin catlinite pipe found in a grave on the Walter Karrow farm 5 miles north of Oshkosh. It is perfect and has 8 notches cut around the edge of the bowl and 4 on the stem. (Received from) Walter Karrow." Original catalog card written by Kannenberg for L300-63 (3939APK): "Hematite diminutive Siouan pipe. Locality: Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago County. Received from Walter Karow. This is a very rare specimen, this type is very rarely found in Wisconsin, undoubtedly it is Siouan. It was found with many other specimens on the Walter Karow farm in 1928. It shows metalic tool marks."
