Shank has curved base with transverse notches on bottom and top; ends in a point at the prow. From the Arthur P. Kannenberg Collection. He recorded the following in his catalog: "Catlinite disc pipe made of red Minnesota catlinite. It has a very peculiar shape. It has 13 notches cut into the base from stem hole to the tip and 5 notches cut vertically across the top, 3 in front of the bowl and 2 behind. This pipe was also found with the other pipes on the Karrow farm. (See OPM 1998.22.178, 1998.22.179, 1998.22.233, 1998.22.235, 1998.22.238.) (Received from) Walter Karow." Original catalog card written by Kannenberg for L300-38 (5086APK): "Catlinite disc pipe. Locality: Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago County. Received from Walter Karow. Catlinite. This is a very peculiar specimen. It would not hold more than a pill of tobacco, it resembles a Chinese opium pipe more than anything I have ever seen. It was a surface find while plowing on the Walter Karow farm in 1928." Notations on the back of (a Milwaukee Public Museum?) photographic print includes: "Handled disk pipe. Found with a group of pipes with two burials on the Walter Karrow farm, Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago County in 1917 while making improvements on the farm. On the site of the Chief Wild Cat Village."
