Record 8/22 Catalog Record Figural & Patterned Designs Exhibit Page Home Search Image 7 of 9 Description  Stem made from one piece of wood, round cross section, applied dark stain; 2 deep spiral grooves, painted blue, from mouthpiece to stem-end; 2 spiral lines of ferrous metal tacks; spatulate mouthpiece; cylindrical bowl-end. T-shaped pipe-head of pipestone, purple with light speckles on one side, light rose with some purple on other side. Bowl, viewed from side, had circular cross section with urn-like base, viewed from end has rectangular cross section. Shank has square cross section at stem-end and then round cross section with flat bottom; tapered prow with diamond cross section extends in front of bowl. Soot on bowl rim. Incised ornamentation: bas-relief 5-pointed star in carved circular field on both sides of bowl above an hourglass (composed of 2 triangles) on bowl base; widely spaced cross hatching on ends of bowl. 3 faces of the stem-end square have a carved hour glass, flat cut end has carving marks. Original catalog card: "Siouan Calumet Pipe. Locality: Menominee Indian Reservation, Shawano County, Wis. Received from Dan Morgan, Pottawattomie. R. N. Buckstaff Collection. The bowl is made from a two colored catlinite, the stem is made of basswood and cut in spiral painted blue, with a lot of tacks nailed about 1 inch apart for decoration. Mr. Morgan who was a Pottawatomy Indian used this pipe during ceremonies but never smoked it."
