Conical bowl; stem shank has octagonal cross section; end of stem has round band with flat bottom; tapered prow in front of bowl. Incised decoration: arrow with fletching on top of shank pointed toward bowl; double-ended hook on facets on either side of top; two sets of two arrows facing each other on facets on right side. From the Benedict Collection acquired by Charles Koehn. Excerpt from the Koehn catalog incudes "A brown pipestone calumet or Peace Pipe. It has 8 sides on the stem. The bowl being cone shape, on one side it has some numbers inscribed, a large arrow on top side, on each side of this, two link like hooks. On the other side four arrows, two reverse from the others. It is an L shape pipe. Benedict Collection.". Original catalog card: "Great Calumet Pipe. Locality: Butte des Morts, Winnebago County, Wis. Received from Ernest Benedict - Koehn Collection. This is an old pipe. It has four arrows inscribed on the right side two coming toward two others indicating war or a battle. It also has a large arrow on the top ridge facing the bowl, on both ridges running parallel with the large arrow are two link like drawings. It has a bad fracture at the stem end. Evidently of Siouan make."
