Description 
|
| Rectangular stem made from one piece of wood, nearly square cross section. Carved decoration accented with charring and dark stain along one face; overall brown stain. Carvings, from mouthpiece: 2 deeply cut grooves (producing 2 narrow rectangles), right-facing triangle, rectangle, left-facing triangle, 4 stacked longitudinal lines, dotted human figure with drawn bow and arrow, A-frame building, 3 rows of 4 stacked dots, 2 stacked wavy lines, 2 rows of 3 stacked dots, 2 deeply cut grooves, two human figures in a canoe, a cross or "t" with 5 encircling dots, 2 rows of 2 stacked "c"s, right facing flag on pole, row (partially outlined with lines of dots) of 3 tepees, 2 deeply cut grooves, bowl-end. The stem is further ornamented with patterned placement of low dome brass tacks. Conical mouthpiece extends from raised band; bowl-end is conical.
Pipe-head is black steatite; T-shaped with round cross section; smoothed and polished. Bowl is conical (the rim is wider than the base) and has 2 encircling inlaid lead bands near the rim. The upper band, 4 mm below bowl rim, is 10 to 11 mm wide with 4 inlaid red pipestone "x" s alternating with 4 inlaid black stone "x"s. The lower band, 2 mm below upper band, is approximately 2 mm wide and irregular (either originally nonuniform or subsequent losses.) Charred black resinous material inside bowl and just at lip of rim. The shank continues in front of the bowl, the top edge tapers to a broken-off point. The pipe-head is cracked and glued together.
Object Late Date is the year of the Fred McKay loan to the museum, circa 1925.
Original catalog card: Locality = Sioux Reservation, North Dakota. "This is a typical Sioux pipe. The pictographs on the stem tell a story. The 2 tents around the Council House, 4 path toward the white man's house meet a man who opposes them(?) 12 scalps were taken, 2 crooked paths lead to an ambush where 6 more are killed. The two deep notches represent 2 deep rivers, where 2 men in a canoe or boat are seen, a white man's cemetery and 5 graves is passed 4 cavalry men are met with a fag, all the Indians surrender and are taken to the U.S. Army camp where they are held prisoners.
