Record 129/204 Catalog Record OPM Pipe Collection Exhibit Page Home Search Image 6 of 6 Description  Fraud? Shell tempered ceramic. Shank bottom has transverse notches and an up curved prow. Identified as a fake by former OPM curator Robert Hruska. From the Arthur P. Kannenberg Collection. He recorded the following in his catalog: "Pottery disc pipe. Found in a grave with much material, pots, etc. on the Walter Karrow farm 5 miles north of Oshkosh on the lake shore road. It has six notches cut on its bottom and is shell tempered. (Received from) Walter Karow." Original catalog card written by Kannenberg for L300-36 (3938APK): "Pottery disc pipe. Locality: Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago County. Received from Walter Karow. Shell tempered pottery. This interesting pipe was found with many others on the Walter Karow farm. They were found with two skeletons and much other material in 1928 when he plowed up two skeletons." Notations on the back of (a Milwaukee Public Museum?) photographic print include: "Pottery disk pipe. This pipe is one of a group of pipes found with two burials on the Walter Karrow farm, Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago County in 1917 while straightening out a fence line, on the Old Wild Cat Village site."
