Fraud? Red pipestone. Asymetrical disk, bowl hole off center; tapered shank has square cross section, hole in one end. Non-uniform sooting on all exterior surfaces.
Original catalog card: "Catlinite Disc Pipe. Evidentially Winnebago. Handleless. Locality: Pierce County, Wis. Received from Carl Wittman Collection, Merrill, Wis. Date: Feb 22, 1941. This is an exceptionally fine Disc Pipe and was unquestionable of Winnebago Indian make. The disc pipes were uncommon (?common) among them." |
