White limestone/chalk. Urn-like hemispheric bowl with 2 encircling raised rings. Tapered rectangular base with square cross section, tapers to prow; raised top and bottom edges on both sides.
Original catalog card: "Terraced-base MicMac Pipe. Locality: Marquette County. Received from S. D. Mitchell Collection. White Limestone. This pipe is made from a pure white limestone, has a terraced base ornamented with incised lines and scalloped keel. This specimen is a very old specimen. It illustrates a stage of development of art, in the unperforated-base style." |
