Description
|
| From the Arthur P. Kannenberg collection. He recorded the following in his catalog: "Trade clay pipe, which was made in Montreal, Canada. It is made of red clay, undoubtedly it was from the original stock of the Robert Grignon Trading Post on the Fox River near Omro. A clam fisherman by the name of Harvey fished it out of the Fox River and gave it to Mr. Staege, gunsmith at Omro. He gave it to me."
Original catalog card written by Kannenberg: "Trade Clay Pipe. Locality: Fox River, near Omro, Wis. Received from William Staege, A. P. Kannenberg Collection." And, same text as above.
"The Canadian pipe-making industry began with earnest in the 1840s and continued into the 20th century. Pipes bearing the Henderson/Montreal mark were made during the period 1847-1876."
