Trap
Description:
Large blacksmith made animal trap, iron jaws and steel springs, with hand made chain. This trap is for a large animal such as a wolf.
Comments:
This steel animal trap held an animal by the leg until it was killed. The long spring levers at each end held the jaws shut. Steel traps were not common or widely used until the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Native people continued to use traditional methods of catching beaver and other fur bearing mammals.
