Object Name:
Harpoon
Description:
Steel Sturgeon Spear or Harpoon.
Comments:
This hand forged iron muskrat spear or harpoon was a common tool during the Fur Trade. The barbs prevented the fish or animal from escaping. The point was lashed to a long wooden shaft and used both for fish and for mammals. During winter, Native hunters would break open a muskrat house and stab and retrieve the animals. This method was faster and less costly than using steel traps. Often the entire muskrat population in a pond or lake was killed.
