Object Name:
Altar
Description:
Part of the altar from the first church built by Father Allouez on the present site of De Pere in 1668. Father Allouez, one of the early missionaries, helped spread Christianity among Native Americans of this territory. He built the first church on Lake Superior in 1665 and one at the Soo in 1668. The same year he traveled up the Fox River stopping at what is now Oshkosh to give mass. That was probably the first time a Catholic ceremony was held in this part of Wisconsin. The place where the first mass was said was in Menominee Park. It was marked with a large boulder.
