Needle

Deer or bear rib bone mat needle. Collector received from Louise Dutchman.
Comments:
It was a pleasant summer day with a gentle breeze off the water that kept the mosquitoes away. The woman had a plentiful supply of newly cut cattails to work with, and more than enough of the tough thread made from the inner bark of the basswood tree. She pulled the bark thread through the hole in the bone and began to weave the long, curved needle back and forth through the neatly aligned cattail flags. This mat was for her daughter's new lodge. When it was finished, she planned to make new mats for the winter longhouse.
