Object Name:
Jar
Description:
Allamakee Trailed? Late Oneota? Reconstructed, approximately 10% original material present. Shell tempered.
Comments:
This is a reconstructed shell-tempered Late Oneota ceramic cooking and storage jar. When the prehistoric potter finished the shape of the vessel she smoothed the exterior surface and then decorated it by impressing and dragging sticks to create the decorations.

Pieces of this jar, called sherds, were found during a museum excavation in 1932 at a prehistoric village site near modern-day Butte des Morts. Even though only a few sherds were found there were enough for a complete reconstruction of the original size and shape of the jar.
