Object Name:
Pipe, Disc
Description:
Disc pipe fragment. Red pipestone. Disc is slightly polished with an incised design.
Comments:
This fragement of a disc pipe was found during Museum excavations in the late 1930s at the prehistoric Oneota village site of Lasley's Point. A stone tool was used to incise the decoration seen on the top of the disc. What does the imagery look like? An animal? Perhaps the sun with long rays?

One of the characteristic artifacts of the Oneota is the disc pipe. This pipe is made of red pipestone which probably was quarried in Wisconsin or Minnesota.
