People of the Waters - Woodland
OPM #:
800-27-T9
Object Name:
Harpoon
Description:
Five-barbed bone harpoon.
Comments:
It was hard chopping a hole in the ice. But the water was clear and the man knew it would be easy to see a fish as it swam along. He tested the new bone harpoon of his fish spear and knew it was sharp, well-pointed, and barbed. On each side of the harpoon were two wooden prongs that would help ensure the bone harpoon stayed centered on the fish. The harpoon had a hole through it with a long cord tied to it. The harpoon would stay in the fish, the shaft would come loose, and then he would haul the fish into his little hut. He dropped his clam shell lure into water. It was shaped like a tiny fish and darted and shimmered as he pulled it up and down. Soon, a big fish would see it as an easy meal.
