Flared bit celt; distintive type of celt; not common in Wisconsin; ceremonial/not used; trade item.
Comments:
No one really knows what this uniquely shaped artifact was used for. Objects that were made into this distinctive shape are called a "spud" or "celt." Some archaeologists believe these uncommon objects were trade items that had a ceremonial or special meaning and were not a utilitarian tool at all. Perhaps future archaeologists will determine its use. This spud was found on the shore of Lake Poygan near Tustin, WI.
