People of the Waters - Woodland
OPM #:
800-30-T5
Object Name:
Celt
Comments:
This stone woodworking tool is similar to the grooved axe head, but smaller. Instead of being lashed to a handle, it was fitted into an opening cut into the handle. Native people would have used this tool to fell and trim trees, craft dugout canoes, and other forms of woodwork.

It was made by grinding the stone against another rock, lubricated with sand and water. The blade is very similar in shape to a modern axe.
