People of the Waters - Archaic
OPM #:
1-452
Object Name:
Projectile Point
Description:
Durst Stemmed; at some point long after this biface was flaked it was reworked into a Durst Stemmed point; all of haft edge remnant is well ground; Hixton Silicified Sandstone. Unable to tell if the reworking of this biface into a Durst Stemmed/Table Rock Stemmed took place in the Late Archaic or in recent times. The minimally weathered (or totally unweathered) surface has been so crudely flaked that it might be the work of someone who has reworked the biface for a modern collector. It may well be a fraudulent artifact. There are also several areas of polish on flake scar ridges that look like bag polish. The original biface may have been a Paleoindian-Early Archaic bifacial preform and/or unhafted knife that was carried wrapped in leather which smoothed and polished the high spots.
