People of the Waters - Archaic
OPM #:

Object Name:
Metate
Comments:
The winter wind howled outside the longhouse as the snow piled up, but it was warm inside. The woman and her daughter knelt around the fire, a flat stone in front of their knees. They scooped seeds onto the stone. Using a small circular stone in their hand, they ground it into meal and added it to a stew in the big pot by the fire.
During the Archaic period, people are becoming less nomadic. They are using more plant foods in their diet, including seeds of native plants. It will be another thousand years before corn is grown on a large scale and these grinding stones become commonplace.
