People of the Waters - Archaic

Object Name:
Boatstone
Comments:
This uniquely shaped stone is what archaeologists call a "boatstone." They were attached to the end of an atlatl (a spear thrower) because it added weight. The extra weight gave the spear greater range and a higher speed, and that was helpful in hunting. The holes were used to lash the boatstone to the thrower.

Unlike birdstones, which might have had ceremonial uses, the boatstone was utilitarian. This artifact was found near Princeton, Wisconsin.
