Comments:
The freshly-cut hickory tree was ready to be split length-wise to make a new bow. The man had both stone and wood wedges ready and he knew that the work would not take long. He pounded the first one in, and then followed the crack and pounded in a second. He did this until the log split in half.

A wedge is a powerful mechanical device. It exerts great force when hammered into wood or stone. Native people knew how to use wedges. This one is made from a hard stone like granite.
