Birdstone
Description:
Birdstone; holes are tapered as would be expected; gabbro.
Comments:
It was beautiful, there was no question of that. The hunter had traded much to obtain the bird and he looked at it adoringly as he carefully tied it to his spear thrower. This special stone would make his spears fly faster and farther, and its power would ensure more kills. He was pleased with it.

Called "birdstones," the best guess is that these distinctive objects may have been used with a spear thrower, called an atlatl. It added weight and gave the throw additional power. However, birdstones might also have had some type of ceremonial purpose. Regardless, it took a great deal of skill and time to make. They have only been found in a few states, including Wisconsin.
