Canoe, Dugout
Description:
Dugout canoe made in Spring Interim 2016 by University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students in an experimental archaeology class taught by UWO professor Dr. Jeffery Behm.
Comments:
Dugout canoes were the earliest vessels used on area waterways and some surviving examples are thousands of years old. Although simple compared to the later birch bark canoe, the dugout canoe enabled early Native people to harvest the richness of the waterways, moving easily through the marsh environment.
